As more former homes of Hollywood’s Elite opens its doors as boutique hotels or vacation villas, there is one standout in Puerto Vallarta that blends the romance of old Mexico with the romantic stories of days gone by. Hollywood glamour may have never been more personified by one star more than Elizabeth Taylor. If you take Taylor’s glamor, blend in some old Spanish Colonial architecture with a dash of Richard Burton brash, you would wish these walls could talk.
Casa Kimberly in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico is comprised of two adjacent Mexican Villas that formerly belonged to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Burton purchased the home next to his for Taylor in 1962 as a gift during the filming of Night of the Iguana, the film that put Mexico’s raw sex appeal on the map, and the town of Puerto Vallarta too. The homes have been renovated and opened as a stunning nine suite boutique hotel by hotelier Janice Chatterton. Elizabeth Taylor fans can even sleep in her former bedroom and enjoy a night soaking in her pink marble heart-shaped bathtub (bubble bath comes standard).
The property opened in December 2015 as a luxurious boutique hotel and tells love story of Taylor and Burton. Traditional aspects of the couple’s home have been preserved including the bridge Puente Del Amor (Bridge of Love), connecting the sister properties. Taylor continued to vacation at Casa Kimberly until it was sold in 1990.
The Elizabeth Taylor Suite boasting over 2,000 square feet pours out to a large terrace, Jacuzzi and private pool, as does the Richard Burton Suite across the bridge. The other seven Suites are named after Taylor’s movies and individually designed and decorated with painted tile ceilings, claw foot bathtubs, fountains and views of the city.
And when you are not relaxing in your palatial Suite, Casa Kimberly’s restaurant, The Iguana, features a delicious blend of modern and traditional Mexican cuisine . And, not to be out done, the bar gives you the opportunity to taste a selection of tequilas with a resident tequila expert complete with a dash of salt and lime.
