The former K Club Resort on Barbuda Island is slated to undergo the ultimate transformation. Hollywood actor, Robert De Niro and Australian billionaire, James Packer are teaming up to renovate the resort into a new overwater luxury hotel-casino resort. The new massive development, called Paradise Found, was recently approved by the Barbuda government.
Packer, a well-known gambling giant, and DeNiro have invested over $250 million in the new resort that will extend over 500 acres of land. If all goes according to plan, construction will commence at the beginning of 2017. The property will feature a luxury marina housing yachts of the rich and famous, plus a complex made up of 50 villas and holiday cottages, each with its own private pool.
The casino will be the heart of the resort and is believed to play an important role in attracting visitors. It’s twin island, Antigua, has long been recognized as a top tourist destination offering some of the world’s best island experiences, but with the construction of the new Paradise Found resort Barbuda now has the opportunity to flourish and become the next luxury getaway for the wealthy. The former K Club located at Coco Point was a cherished destination of Princess Diana in the early 1980s but the once-luxurious vacation spot has been untouched for 12 years.
“I have been coming to Antigua and Barbuda since I was in my early twenties,” De Niro said at a press conference, as reported by Forbes. “You have to develop this property in a very concerted way and curate it . . . It’s about making it very, very special.”
De Niro has promised to train a workforce in hospitality and security roles in hopes to provide new jobs.
Packer and De Niro already have a long-standing friendship and business partnership through the highly acclaimed Nobu restaurant chain. Nobu has branches in several of Packer’s casinos such as Crown Perth and Crown Casino Melbourne and the new Barbuda project is sure to be one of the most successful for this team of A-lister.
